Stage 11
Sozzigalli-Modena
In this stage, we move from the Secchia to another, less large, but historically important river, the Naviglio, which once connected the center of Modena (right the Ducal Palace, and was often used by the Este family for various needs) We are in lands rich in world-famous productions: wines (lambrusco), fashion, motors. After some historical emergencies related to river navigation, very important until a few decades ago, and historic villas, we come to a World Heritage monument. This is the thousand-year-old Romanesque-style architectural complex consisting of the Cathedral by Lanfranco and Wiligelmo, and the “Ghirlandina” Tower, its soaring bell tower.
Everything, starting with the stones, speaks to us of the medieval world, where the cathedral and town hall still overlook the same square, the marketplace.
Here we will meet King Arthur, an extraordinary stone Genesis, and even the measure of cottage cheese, all on the walls of the same church.
